Many initiatives are taken up by the Buddha Purnima Project, HMDA on the environment protection front. Awareness campaign, Functions on the occassions of World Wetland Day, Earth Day, World Environment Day etc are regularly conducted in the BPP area.

In or order to mitigate the harmful effects by global warming and climate change, BPP-HMDA has taken initatives for "Reduce-Recycle-Reuse" of natural resources. Few of them are as follows:

1. Reduce, Recycle & Reuse
  1. Solar LED lighting is introduced in Sanjeevaiah Park on the occassion of Earth Day i.e., on 22-04-2010. About 17 LED light poles are installed so far to mark a beginning towards the commitment of BPP/HMDA for reduction of usage of conventional electricity, which is generated mostly by burning fossil fuels. More number of solar LED lighting is being taken up on the occasion of World Environment Day June 5th, 2010.

  2. Hyderabad eco art project, another unique project is launched on the Earth Day i.e., on 22-04-2010, wherein, sculptures from the waste iron scrap are made by the renowned artist Mr. Manohar Chiluvuri and they are installed at Sanjeevaiah Park. This is a live example of ‘recylce’ of the waste scrap into a great Art.

2. Say NO to Plastic

On 1st of May, 2010 the Metropolitan Commissioner, HMDA declared the area of Hussain Sagar and its surroundings as Plastic Free Zone. A series of measures are taken in this regard.
  1. All the existing vendors in these locations (viz., NTR Gardens, Secretariat Road, Opposite to I-Max, Necklace Road, Lumbini Park, Eat Street, Jal Vihar, Sanjeevaiah Park etc) started using paper plates, paper / cloth bags and paper cups in place of plastic.
  2. A team of Task force is constituted, who will daily do patroling in BPP areas and educate & also enforce the implementation.
  3. Special information kiosks are erected at Lumbini Park, Sanjeevaiah Park, NTR Gardens, with volunteer from NGO’s to provide the information about free plastic zone to protect the lake surroundings.
