Buddha Purnima Project Authority (BPPA) was originally constituted for the development of Hussain Sagar Lake and its environs covering an area of 902 Hectares, under the provisions of the A.P. Urban Areas (Development) Act 1975, vide G.O. Ms.No.575, M.A. & U.D. Department, dated 12th December, 2000 and the surrounding area of Hussain Sagar Lake was declared as a special development area.
Consequent on dissolution of Special Development Authorities viz., HUDA, BPPA, CDA, HADA vide G.O. Ms. No.572 dt: 25-08-2008 and constitution of Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) vide G.O. Ms. No.571 dt: 25-08-2008, the Buddha Purnima Project has become a functional unit of HMDA with the following objectives.
Growth of the lake
Environmental up-gradation
Development of the Area for Special purposes viz.
Tourism
Ecotourism
Water sports
Theme parks
Creation of recreational spots of international standards
Infrastructure development

The recreational pockets of BPP such as Lumbini Park, NTR gardens, Laserium, Necklace Road, Peoples Plaza have become star attractions of twin-cities for all tourists, both local and outsiders.
